A Little Sleep Help for the Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu sleep help tips
If your looking for a few sleep help tips to comfort your child's cold or flu symptoms, don't worry, we've got you covered:)

The cold and flu season is here, so we have a few sleep help tips to soothe your child’s aches and pains:)  After all,  getting them comfy cozy is a crucial component in their recovery, their sleep, and YOUR sleep;)

Rehydrate Regularly

Did you know if we have a cold or fever, moisture is zapped, right out of our bodies?  That’s why doctors tell us to drink plenty of liquids🙂  Yep.  When we’re sick, our body’s average fluid intake is compromised.  How?   Unfortunately, it’s creating yucky, annoying mucus.  And if you’re administering cold medicine?  Well,  it works wonders to dry up the irritating mucus, but it’s also evaporating our body’s essential moisture.   So, now it makes sense when the doctor says, “Drink plenty of liquids”:)  We need to drink more than usual since our average moisture intake produces unwanted mucus, ultimately drying up with a high fever and cold remedies.  Funny, before now, “drink plenty of liquids” seemed like a cliche’ to me.  You know, keeping us focused on something other than the cold.  Now I know “WHY” my family needs to drink plenty of liquids, and it’s not just because the doctor said so;).  I love concrete answers, don’t you?

The Magic of Honey

A little sleep help with honey?  You bet:) This thick magical serum naturally coats and soothes agitated mucus membrane accompanying sore throats and coughs.  Plus, studies show our wizardly bee friend’s potion naturally carries antioxidants, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.   Yep.  Bees are insightful little creatures.  And the lemon?  This tart super fruit, coupled with warm water, thins mucus.   Since these ingredients naturally add much-needed moisture to our bodies, many experts prefer this quick and easy recipe to  Over-the-Counter liquid zapping meds: Add one teaspoon honey and one tablespoon lemon a cup of hot water, so it dissolves.  Then, before giving it to your kiddo, add a few tablespoons of cold water to create a safe, ingestible temperature.  It’s that easy:)

TLC

According to science, when your child is sick, giving them extra cuddles, hugs, and affection trigger dopamine release in their brain, which is a natural pain reliever. Research shows feeling Love targets and stimulates the brain in the same way as powerful pain killers and drugs like cocaine.  Crazy right?  So, the idea that Love is a Drug is accurate.  That’s why when we feel love, our spirits truly lift from the outpour of dopamine. Pretty cool, huh?  The good news is it’s time for you to slow down when your child is sick.  Take a nap with them, give plenty of love, cuddles, and hugs.   I’m sure they will tell you it’s just what the doctor ordered:)

Menthol Magic

After a warm and calming detoxifying Epsom Salt bath, give your little sweetie the sleep help they need with a soft and soothing, rhythmic massage.  Then, for a calm, cooling sensation, add a bit of Vicks VaporRub to their throat and chest.  The Camphor and Eucalyptus oil found in this magical salve gives your little one added comfort for a good night’s rest.

Vic’s Vapor Rub Fun Facts

Did you know Camphor oil comes from camphor trees?  After the refining process, this homegrown remedy relieves pain, irritation, and itching.  And the fragrant minty menthol?  Well, it, too, is found in nature via peppermint and eucalyptus plants, a long-time remedy used to soothe irritated, congested nasal passages.  Plus, the eucalyptus oil carries antibacterial,  antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.  Good to know, right?
